UCF Knights Football History

The UCF Knights football team represents the University of Central Florida. UCF first fielded a varsity football team in the fall of 1979 as an NCAA Division III program, they steadily moved up the racks through Division I-AA and then gained Division I FBS status in 1996, where they sit today as a member of the AAC Conference. Since then they have played in 13 Bowl games and are just under 300 wins as a collegiate team. In 2017 Knights completed a 13–0 perfect season. It was controversial that the Knights were not selected as a top-four team to compete for the College Football Playoff, instead completing their season with a New Year's Day win in the 2018 Peach Bowl over the No. 7 Auburn Tigers. On January 7, 2018, the day before the CFP championship game, UCF athletic director Danny White stated that UCF would claim the 2017 national championship, and hung a national title banner. -It began as a Division III program, gradually climbing the ranks to Division I-AA.
